- Arcade type games have always found a home on the Apple II, and the new
freeware release by Aaron Heiss continues this tradition. His new game
Sparks is an arcade-style game for one or two players, the object being to
pilot a spark around an arena, trying to pick up targets without hitting
the arena walls or the trail that the sparks leaves behind. A copy of the
game can be downloaded
from: http://web.pdx.edu/~heiss/software/sparks.html

- Kent Dickey has released a new update to KEGS, the Apple II emulation
programs which run under different types of Unix, including Mac OSX. This
current release fixes some bugs to the program code, and includes among
other things, improved serial port usage and the ability to emulate up to
14 megs of Apple IIGS memory. Different versions of the program for
different flavors of Unix are available for download at:
http://kegs.sourceforge.net/

- The Free Tools Association has announced the release of version 1.7 of
their ActiveX Apple IIGS emulator, which is based on KEGS by Kent Dickey
as noted above. This particular emulator runs as an ActiveX component on
an IBM-clone running Internet Explorer. Check it out at:
http://www.freetoolsassociation.com/

Matt Portune has taken this a step further and has uploaded around 250
programs to a front-end of the FTA program. Check them out at:

- The September 2003 issue of Call-A.P.P.L.E. is now available for
download by members at the organization's website:
http://www.callapple.org/

- Apple II users will find information of interest in the "Digital
Deli: The Comprehensive, User-Lovable Menu of Computer Lore, Culture,
Lifestyles and Fancy" recently released by Kevin Savetz at
atariarchives.org. Originally published in 1984, the material includes
stories of the early development of several types of personal computer,
including the Apple II. It can be found at:
http://www.atariarchives.org/deli

- Anyone interested in designing games for the Apple IIGS might want to
check out Lucas Scharenbroich's Generic Tile Engine. The program allows
the user to create side-scrolling games on the Apple IIGS, and supports
art in several different Apple-friendly formats. More information can be
found at Mr. Scharenbroich's website: http://iigs.dreamhost.com/gte/gte.html
